Our Story
Barton and Megan Cutter met on February 15, 2003 in Tucson, Arizona at a martial arts seminar- it was when Megan returned that they realized they both loved writing and had similar family experiences. Barton was completing his education at the University of Arizona and Megan was organizing trade shows in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. They began e-mailing poetry and short stories back and forth to each other for several months before Barton proposed to Megan on Thanksgiving Day in 2003.
Barton and Megan were married on November 13, 2004 in Tuscaloosa, Alabama where Barton walked Megan down the aisle, the first time he stood and walked publicly. They soon realized that Alabama was not the best place for them to live with little support for people with disabilities, limited access resources like sidewalks or transportation systems as well as limited employment opportunities.
When Barton and Megan moved to Raleigh, NC in August 2005, they combined more than ten years of writing experience and synthesized their passion for writing with other skills to serve as the foundation for a creative and service-oriented communications company, Cutter's Word, LLC.
In addition, Barton coaches and mentors children or youth with disabilities and their families. Together, they teach self defense classes to people of all abilities. They travel state and nationwide, speaking about disabilities and relationships, self defense and self advocacy.
Barton and Megan Cutter teach everyday, just by being who they are. The work that they do in both their personal and professional lives is to educate and advocate that people with disabilities can be married, can have a family, can work, and can be leaders in our community. Children and adults with disabilities look up to Barton and Megan as successful in their lives by breaking through social limitations, and people without disabilities are challenged as they continue to break so many barriers that are still present in their community.
